Welcome to Wolf Creek CommonsIn Grass Valley, California, on a wooded hillside along Wolf Creek, two independent cohousing communities are coming into being. It's a special spot that feels secuded, like it is miles out, but is in fact within a couple blocks walking distance to 2 full grocery stores, several retail stores and many restaurants. Wolf Creek Commons is the child-friendly Wolf Creek Commons cohousing. The other cohousing community, Wolf Creek Lodge, is for active adults past their child rearing years, and will share the same beautiful site. Please visit their website, www.wolfcreeklodge.org, if that is of interest to you. At this time, both groups are open to new members and welcome inquiries from others who seek a sense of community or are simply curious. Our Calendar of Events will show you opportunities to meet our community and learn more. The people in Wolf Creek Commons are strongly committed to building an inclusive community that has children and adults of all ages, a variety of family configurations, and diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds, interests, and professions. Our desire is to have a community in which many of the households are families with children. The eco-village, which uses sustainable and green building practices and materials, is located creekside in a highly walkable neighborhood. It is also just under 1 mile from the historic downtown Grass Valley, where you will find unique stores, hotels, bed & breakfast inns, wine tasting rooms, art galleries, restaurants, and entertainment. Nestled in the heart of theSierra Nevada Foothills, historic downtown Grass Valley is truly a postcard image. The area is bathed in a wondrous mix of cedar, pine, and an assortment of deciduous trees that burst forth a multitude of Fall colors as the cooler temperatures arrive, the circa 1800 Gold Rush era town offers a window into the past while providing great things of what the present has to offer. You’ll find more information and links about cohousing and the Grass Valley area, including the excellent local schools and many cultural features on the Resources page. The Wolf Creek Commons membership currently includes some young families, some retirees, and many in-between. Members live both in Nevada County and elsewhere in Northern California. Organized in February 2006, with a projected move-in date sometime in 2009, our community values living lightly on the earth and is enriched by the diverse experiences, ages, and perspectives of its members. CoHousing Partners and McCamant & Durrett ArchitectsTo make our dreams a reality, Wolf Creek Commons and Wolf Creek Lodge are working with the experienced professional teams at CoHousing Partners (CP) and McCamant & Durrett Architects. The people at CP are highly skilled in their ability to collaborate with groups of people who may be initially unfamiliar with the complexity, timeline, finances, creativity, enthusiasm, and expertise that are all part of a cohousing project. Things can and do change as the project evolves – sometimes very quickly, sometimes at what seems a glacial pace. The CP team provides information, support, and perspective all along the way. In addition to the Wolf Creek projects, CoHousing Partners is actively developing more cohousing communities in Northern California. For information about cohousing throughout the USA, visit the Cohousing Association of the United States McCamant & Durrett Architects was founded in 1987 by Kathryn McCamant and Charles Durrett. The firm specializes in cohousing design, childcare facilities, pedestrian-friendly town planning, and development consulting. The practice reflects strong values of community, cooperation, and sustainability. Katie and Chuck literally wrote the book on this subject – Cohousing, A Contemporary Approach to Housing Ourselves. Feb 2008. We are so proud of our McCamant & Durrett Architects, that have just been awarded the Silver 2008 Energy Value Housing Award for the energy efficient construction of the Nevada City cohousing!
