Who We Are

The current members of Wolf Creek Commons range in age from infants to seniors.  Our interests and careers are diverse.  Please see our Members' bios (you need Adobe Acrobat to view bios, download it for free, if you don't have it). What we share is a desire to live in a vibrant community that offers a healthy blend of privacy and group participation.  What we want is an inclusive community with children and adults of all ages, a variety of family configurations, and diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds, interests, and professions.  We’d love for about half the households to be families with children.

At one of our meetings we created a list of Community Qualities & Activities we’d like to have within Wolf Creek Commons.  Perhaps you’ll see things that you like here already.  We’re always adding more.  What would you add?

We have a blog. If you would like to read more about our day to day experiences please visit: WCC Blog: building a new community.  Please come meet us at a general meeting or social event.  See the Calendar of Events.

Our Vision Statement

We are a cohousing community of caring, creative people living together in peace, joy, and love in an affordable, sustainable, and harmonious environment.  Through consensus we create and maintain a participatory and collaborative balance between our diverse individual members and the community.  We appreciate and nurture the earth, our neighbors, and each other.

Our Professional Team

CoHousing Partners is the leading company in the cohousing development arena.  It evolved from a ten year collaboration between Wonderland Hill Development Company and McCamant & Durrett Architects and is the most experienced group of cohousing professionals outside of Denmark.  Together they have created dozens of successful communities including those in Cotati, Nevada City, and Pleasant Hill, California.  Their approach integrates the disciplines of land development, community organizing, and professional consulting to enable clients to build neighborhoods from the inside out.  They truly collaborate with future residents in creating each new cohousing community.

How We Make Decisions

The activities of the community are accomplished by a number of committees, described below, which bring information and action requests to the whole group as needed.  We make decisions by consensus which requires that everyone truly participate.  This process sometimes takes a while, but everyone’s voice is heard and each final decision is typically better and more creative than any single original proposal.  Because some things need to happen quickly, we can empower committees to make decisions within specified parameters on behalf of the entire community when necessary.  We also have a voting process in place as backup for the rare situation in which consensus might elude us.

Meetings and Guidelines

While our homes are in development, we are doing our work largely via teleconference and at an in-person monthly general meeting.  There is a one-hour Orientation for interested people and prospective new members preceding the general meeting each month.  The Orientation usually begins at 8:45 and all who attend are welcome to stay for all or part of the general meeting that follows.

We conduct ourselves according to our mutually agreed upon Meeting Guidelines.

Wolf Creek Commons Meeting Guidelines

  2. Speak one at a time
  3. Share the air time
  4. Be concise
  5. Avoid repetition

Committees

Healthy communities are like living organisms – dynamic and changing.  So over time, the focus and composition of our committees will change too.  Here are the current committees that keep the Wolf Creek Commons vision moving forward.

WCC Committee Descriptions

Rhythm Section – Keeping the beat, coordinating the committees
Communication – Connecting the community
Design Review – From concept to reality
Finance & Legal – Taking care of business
Landscape – Collaborating with Nature
Membership – Building the community
Outreach & Marketing – Sharing the cohousing dream
Process – Facilitating progress
Social – Getting acquainted and having fun

Rhythm Section
Provides leadership, and long and short term planning.  Coordinates the functions of all the other committees.  Collaborates with the Process committee to decide which topics will be addressed at which general meeting.  Serves as liaison to CoHousing Partners.

Communication
Facilitates internal group electronic communications; maintains the web site for both internal and public audiences; maintains systems for archiving minutes and other important documents.

Design Review
Liaison between Wolf Creek Commons and CoHousing Partners and McCamant & Durrett architects for all design matters.  Makes design decisions for WCC that do not change or reinterpret programming decisions.  Keeps WCC updated on design progress.

Finance & Legal
Oversees financial and legal business for the group.  Includes aspects of managing the LLC (Limited Liability Company), collecting and recording membership dues, and paying for approved expenses such as child care, facility rentals, snacks, and so on.

Landscape
Works closely with the architects and developers to ensure Wolf Creek Commons will be a place of visual beauty in harmony with the natural surroundings.  This includes use of native plants, and aesthetic and functional integration of natural areas with those where various activities will occur.

Membership
Administers the membership and seniority processes.  Conducts regular Orientation meetings for people who are curious about the project.  Maintains all membership and seniority records.  Helps new members integrate into the community.

Outreach & Marketing
Answers questions for anyone who’s curious about the project or cohousing in general, including neighbors of the WCC site, the City of Grass Valley, and those who’d like to learn about the WCC membership process.

Process
Facilitates effective communication and decision-making.  In concert with the Rhythm Section, Process plans the format and agenda for general meetings.  It then facilitates those meetings, including necessary logistics.  Also helps identify training needs and brings in training resources.

Social
Organizes social events for the group.  Outings, potlucks, and other gatherings allow us to get to know each other better and ensure that we have fun.
